Long ago in a distant time, and a distant land there was a kingdom ruled by a greedy monarch whose wilful and carless spending had led his land to the brink of economic collapse. And in this land was a farmer whose wife had died in childbirth, leaving the two to work twice as hard to stay afloat with taxes which seemed to grow higher every year. Lukas her father, worked as a sheep herder while his daughter Marta had from the age of eight years worked the spindle and held a talent that surpassed even that of the eldest of the country. She spent her days spinning fibres from flax, yarn, cotton and the finest wool from her father’s sheep. This talent of her had kept them afloat through for the past decade. The father would joke that she could spin gold from straw if she truly wished. These idle jokes eventually made it to the ears of the King who wondered perhaps if they be true.
